GRANTS PASS Brookings resident Arthur William Whiting, 64, died Sunday in a one car accident on U.S. Highway 199 in Grants Pass.

Whiting was northbound in his 1991 Jaguar Sovereign on 199. He went around a corner near milepost 10 and left the right side of the roadway. The vehicle traveled almost parallel to the highway, Oregon State Police said.

The vehicle then went through multiple bushes before hitting an embankment on the other side of a creek. The vehicle landed on its wheels in the creek, facing the roadway, troopers said.

Whiting was conscious upon the arrival of medical personnel, troopers said. He advised the medical personnel that he did not have chest pain prior to the crash. During extrication from the vehicle, Whiting lost consciousness and was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at Three Rivers Dimmick Hospital, troopers said.

Whiting died as a result of extensive chest injuries incurred during the crash, troopers said.

Hospital staff found Whitings itinerary in his wallet that showed he was to pick up his wife, Joyce Whiting, at the Medford Airport at 3:30 p.m. The Medford Police were advised and contacted his wife upon her arrival, troopers said.
