Gerald D. Fries, 67, Brookings, died Sept. 14, 2000.

He was born Nov. 5, 1932, in Pontiac, Mich., to Leslie D. and Lucille (Brown) Fries.

He was raised and educated in Northern California and was the first sworn police officer in Novato, Calif. He retired from the police force in 1975.

He and his first wife Georgia lived in Novato for several years. They had two sons.

In 1986, he moved to Brookings from Hornbrook, Calif.

He married Deborah Crocker Dec. 25, 1990, in Brookings.

In the last years of his life, he was the manager of the Fairway Driving Range in Crescent City. He loved playing golf and playing with his three dogs.

He was employed by the Brookings Police Department as a 911 dispatcher for several years.

Survivors are his wife Deborah Fries, Brookings; sons Daniel Fries, Fresno, Calif.; Douglas Fries, South Lake Tahoe, Calif.; Phillip Reynolds, Brookings; brother Patrick Fries of Hawaii.

Also surviving are five grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents and brother Michael Fries.

Graveside services are scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 19, at 10 a.m. at Ward Memorial Cemetery.

Pastors Brandon Fries and Curt Fox will officiate.

Arrangements are under the direction of Scantlins Brookings Mortuary Chapel.
