Walls were rising this week for a Brookings senior housing complex under construction on Moore Street just off Arnold Lane.

Contractor Bill Thatcher of Lovelace Construction said the 24-unit complex will likely be completed by the end of August.

The facility was proposed by Timberlake Development of Salem, which developed Azalea Reach, a low-income housing adjacent to Azalea Park on Old County Road.

The Brookings City Council endorsed construction of Pelicans Perch, a low-income managed care facility for seniors, when it was presented a year ago.

During discussion of the proposal, Mayor Bob Hagbom said, I am always very happy to get state and federal dollars spent on our community.

Azalea Reach is first class in appearance and will be kept that way. Im sure this complex will be kept the same, he said.

Laura Coomes, vice president of Timberlake Development, said the strong endorsement by the Brookings City Council aided in the companys application for funding.

Pelicans Perch is one of only seven projects in the entire state to receive this type of funding out of this application cycle at Oregon Housing, Coomes said in a letter to The Pilot.

We owe a large vote of thanks to the many citizens of Brookings who took the time to write letters in support of the project, as well as to the support we received from the city staff and council, Coomes wrote.

She said the development, for people 62 and older, will contain 22 one-bedroom units and two two-bedroom, two-bath units. Rents will range from around $220 per month up to around $460 per month depending upon the residents income level and household size, Coomes said.

The complex is designed to serve the special needs of seniors, and will include on-site meal services, bathing, physical therapy and other activities. Coomes said a community room on the third floor will have a whole window wall with an absolutely glorious view of the ocean.
