Wilbur Eugene Ellingsen

Wilbur Eugene Ellingsen, 82, Brookings, died April 11, 2001, at Curry Good Samaritan Center after a long illness.

He was born May 28, 1918, to Veda Munjar Ellingsen and Chester Leon Ellingsen in Oakland, Calif.

He was raised in Walnut Creek, Calif., and graduated from Mount Diablo High School in 1937.

Mr. Ellingsen joined the Merchant Marine, sailing for Standard Oil Co. with time off for school at Santa Rosa Community College and San Francisco State University.

During World War II, he served with the Merchant Marine on the West Coast and in the South Pacific. He was deck officer and earned his masters license in May 1946 for steam and motor vessels, and grosstons upon any ocean.

He married Jane Bemish Ellingsen in 1950 in Oakland, Calif. That year, he began a long career in real estate as a broker retiring in 1980.

He and his family moved to Brookings in July 1971 from Pleasant Hill, Calif. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and a longtime member of the Elks Lodge.

He enjoyed ocean sport fishing, baseball, boating and golfing. He also enjoyed the morning coffee clatch at the Chetco Senior Center in later years.

Mr. Ellingsen had a passion for the ocean and enjoyed family activities.

Survivors are his wife of 50 years Jane Ellingsen of Brookings; daughter Linda OHare of Walnut Creek, Calif.; sons Robert Ellingsen of Watsonville, Calif.; Marc and Ellen Ellingsen of Redwood City, Calif; grandchildren Amy Maxwell and Jesse Ellingsen, both of Redwood City; great-grandchildren Christopher and Sydney Maxwell, both of Redwood City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister Maxine Lyman.

A memorial service is planned for April 21 at 1 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1200 Easy St.

Pastor Dr. Gordon Myrah will officiate.

Direct cremation is planned with Port Orford Funeral Service. His ashes will be scattered off the coast of Brookings.
