Ernest Ernie H. Ladd Sr.

Ernest Ernie H. Ladd Sr., 77, Brookings, died April 15, 2001, at Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City.

He was born Dec. 29, 1923, in Kerkoff, Calif.

He grew up in Stockton, Calif. After graduating from Stockton High School, he married Alberta Ledbetter. Later, he helped to build the Alaska highway.

The Ladds moved to Hawaii, where they worked as civilian employees of the U.S. Army during World War II.

He returned to Stockton after the war and worked for many years as an inspector for Sharpe General Army Depot. After working for J.I. Case Tractor Co. in research and development, he moved to Auberry, Calif., where he ran his cattle ranch from 1966 to 1987.

In 1988, he and his wife moved to Brookings. He served as president of the Chetco Pelican Players and acted in several plays. He was also president of the Friends of Music and was a member of the Elks Club.

Survivors are his wife Alberta Ladd of Brookings; sons and daughters-in-law: Ernest Ladd Jr. and Susan Ladd of Hanford, Calif; Fred and Cheryl Ladd of Grants Pass; sisters Alice Wilson, Rose Woody, Carolyn Willis and June Ladd, all of Stockton, Calif., and Mary Kraus of Agoura Hills, Calif.; grandchildren John Ladd; Lindsay Rynda; great-grandchild Damariea Taylor.
