Edward George Smith, 49, former owner of Brookings Coastal Cycle Center, pleaded guilty Monday to one count of second-degree sex abuse, one count of third-degree sodomy and two counts of prostitution.

Smith, arrested in Las Vegas in March, waived his extradition hearing there. He returned to Curry County April 3, said District Attorney Charlie Steak.

Brookings Police Detective John Bishop said Smith paid at least three Brookings girls, ages 14 to 16, to perform sexual intercourse and oral sex on him at his shop

Bishop said the prostitution started at the beginning of the school year. Law enforcement officials heard information on the street and an investigation began around the first of the year.

Smiths wife, Carol, was a co-owner of the shop, but there is no evidence that she was involved in the prostitution or had knowledge of it, Bishop said.

Judge Hugh Downer sentenced Smith to 17 months. Smith is currently lodged in the Curry County Jail. He will go to the intake center in Salem where he will be assigned to a prison, Steak said.

Smith will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, he said.
