Carl Edmund Merritt

Carl Edmund Merritt, 81, Brookings, died May 12, 2001, in Crescent City.

He was born Jan. 5, 1920, in Turlock, Calif.

He graduated from Turlock High School, Modesto Junior College and University of Southern California.

He excelled in athletics and earned a scholarship to the University of Southern California where he became a champion shot putter.

During World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy as an officer and served as a naval aviator in North Africa.

After the war, he earned a teaching certificate and a masters degree in education. He had a 33-year career as a math teacher and a track coach at Santa Monica College in Santa Monica, Calif.

He retired and moved to Oregon in 1979.

He was a 10-year resident of Brookings and was a regular participant at the Chetco Senior Center. He was known for his candid sketches of community members.

Survivors are his wife of 57 years Marjorie Merritt of Brookings; sons Jeffery Merritt of Waterford, Calif.; Gary Merritt of Kenmore, Wash.; grandsons Alexander and Stuart Merritt, both of Seattle; Spencer Merritt of Winton, Calif.

Memorial services are planned for Sunday, May 20, at 2 p.m. at Brookings-Harbor Christian Church, 777 Fifth St.
