STATE ADDS $1 MILLION TO SOUTHWESTERN BUILDING FUND

The Oregon Legislature has added $1 million to the building fund for the Brookings Center of Southwestern Oregon Community College.

Southwestern President Steve Kridelbaugh gave South Coast legislators Sen. Ken Messerle, R-Coos Bay, and State Rep. Wayne Krieger, R-Gold Beach, credit for getting the funding included in the last-minute "budget reconciliation" bill.

"This will provide education for our young people to stay in our community," Krieger said. "This is something substantive for the community that will last for a long, long time."

The building fund for the Brookings Center now stands at almost $2 million. Twice in the past year, district voters turned down property tax levies that included building funds for the Brookings Center.

Southwestern officials are still searching for an appropriate site for the center, with an emphasis on an appropriate price, or even donated land.

"This million dollars puts us over the hill," Kridelbaugh said, "but it's not going to be a palace."
