It took 18 hours of asking for bids on television, from the audience at the studio and from people watching on the Internet, but the Brookings-Harbor Chamber of Commerce reached its goal.

We are still tallying, but we are expected to reach budget of $26,500, Les Cohen, chamber executive director, said Tuesday of the weekends event. I think we did a little more than last year.

The auction, a major annual fundraiser for the chamber, was held at the Brookings Elks Lodge Saturday and Sunday. People could watch KBSC-TV and call in bids, or sit in the lodge and make live bids.

People who were in the studio could be entered for a drawing to spin a wheel for prizes.

New this year was the auction live on the Internet. Cohen said the chamber had bidders from Carmel, Calif., and Seattle.

The auction may have been called a success, but it wasnt without problems. There was apparently reluctance to spend money and there were sound problems, Cohen said.

We had a good audience, Cohen said. It countered any loss of viewers.

There was an increase in the number of bidders, too, Cohen said.

Now we can start planning for next years auction, Cohen said. We will work on making it better, smoother and more entertaining.

Volunteers who helped include Family Security Bank, Curry Coastal Pilot, Edge Wireless, Century 21, Brookings-Harbor Ford, Klamath First Federal, Fred Meyer, Azalea Quilters Guild and Chetco Federal Credit Union answering the phones.
