Benjamin Franklin Cartwright

Benjamin Franklin Cartwright, 83, Brookings, died Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, from complications of cancer.

Mr. Cartwright was born June 6, 1918, in San Diego, Calif., and lived there until moving to Brookings in 1988 with his wife Theresa.

He retired as a 39-year veteran of the U.S. Army, starting as a horse soldier in 1939. He served in World War II in North Africa, Italy and Germany. He retired from the U.S. Army Reserve in April 1978. He worked as an insurance salesman, tax preparer and financial planner.

Survivors are his wife of Brookings; children, Stephnie Clifford of Brookings; Bruce Cartwright of Ocean Springs, Miss.; David Cartwright of Brookings; and sister Elizabeth Jean Shukraft of Oklahoma. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by son Neil Cartwright.

A memorial service was Nov. 20 at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Arrangements are under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.
