HUNDREDS FEAST ON FISH FOR FIRE DEPARTMENT

Volunteers were in full force Saturday afternoon raising money for the Cape Ferrelo Fire Department by serving a fish meal to anyone arriving with an appetite.

About 300 people dined on albacore tuna caught off the coast of Baja California, Mexico, and cod caught off the coast of Brookings by members of the fire department. The fish were accompanied by garlic bread and Caesar salad.

Many people treated themselves to seconds, then followed the meal with a dessert from the selection of goodies provided by Cape Ferrelo residents.

Fire Chief Richard Miller said the event raised about $1,500 after expenses of nearly the same amount. This year, Lutheran Brotherhood 8323 will match $1,000 of the proceeds.

Top prize from raffle ticket sales was for a two-night stay at White Rock Resort cabins on the California side of the state line, and two dinners at Nautical Inn. The prize was won by Harold and Ruth Whitson.

Second prize was a night?s stay in a cabin at Chetco River Resort.

About 30 other items contributed by local businesses were raffled, too, said Steve Gumm, who sold the tickets.

The dinner culminated with a plaque presented to Chief Richard Miller for 10 years of service to the department.

The presentation was a surprise to Miller.

?It brought a little tear to him,? Gumm said.

Albacore was marinated in teriyaki sauce then grilled over a charcoal flame. To keep it from getting too dry, it was soaked for a couple of minutes in teriyaki sauce again before being served, said Harry Roberts, who was working the grills along with Dick Tylock and Mark Johnson.

Hardly any albacore was left at the end of the day, Miller said. However, there was plenty of cod left. Enough was purchased to feed 400 people.

The beer-batter rock cod was prepared by Allen Harrell, Diana Blazo and Stacy Hopkins. Next to them was Bob Basham who prepared pounds of salad.

Several people served the food, but fire department officials gave special credit for the ?community service provided by the youth.?

Youths who helped were Jeremy Gumm, Rachel Carrillo and Michelle Carrillo.

This is the fourth year the fire department has held the fish fry. Money is added to the general fund to augment the $36,000 tax base needed to operate the 20 member department, Miller said.
