PORTLAND The Brookings-Harbor High School Bear Delights Dance Team battled 35 teams to finish sixth at the OSAA-US Bank Dance & Drill State Championships Saturday at the Chiles Center of the University of Portland.

In the first round, 28 teams were eliminated. The Bear Delights were one of seven teams to advance to the second round where they finished sixth.

Their routine, Precious Things, was performed to a compilation of music by Tori Amos.

I think they did very well. Basically, seven of the girls are first-year (dancers). I think they did outstanding, said Coach Melody Gossard.

I think where we lost it was with teams like Wilsonville and Salem that have more than 30 girls. We have 12, Gossard said.

With 12 members, the Bear Delights fall into the 3A-large category of competitors, which also includes teams that have up to 30 members.

The first round was so clean. We did so well. They fell down a little on the second performance, Gossard said.

She said the girls may have had trouble with the cameras that were overhead and on the floor. She said many times the cameraman would just barely remove the camera before a dancer would leap over it.

However, Gossard said she was impressed with the team.

Unlike some of the other teams competing, the Bear Delights choreograph their dances rather than have a professional do it.

They own their performance. Its a team effort, Gossard said.

The state routine was choreographed by Tiffiny Gossard, who is the only senior this year.

The team began learning the routine in December.
