Robotics teacher Gary Suter, team captain and student Nathaniel Barnard and the Brookings-Harbor Robotics Team are working long hours after school to prepare a robot for competitions.

“I won’t have time for anything but school, robotics and sleep for the next few weeks,” Barnard said.

Pointing to wooden ramps and bridges strewn about the room, Suter said, “they have to build the field too.”

The team will practice on this field, Suter said. They are planning to qualify for district championships.

In the computer room, 3D printer expert Sasha Kay printed plastic parts to stabilize sliding metal rods while Barnard designed components on a computer.

In the shop, groups of students worked on parts of the robot and tested prototypes.

Two team members sanded student Jedediah Doan’s oversized picnic table. The table, built as a group project, will be sold at the team’s silent auction.

Raising money is difficult, Suter said.

Co-mentor Dane Tippman said they would need more than $11,000 to travel to competitions.

According to Tippman, the team will host a surf and turf feast in February to raise money.

“We’ll be serving crab and beef,” he said. “And the silent auction will be held there, too.”

Black Trumpet Bistro is donating its time to cook for the event, and students will serve, Suter said.

Student McKenna Davis-Overly said the team has received donations from Slugs ’N’ Stones ’N’ Ice Cream Cones, Harbor Tattoo and Whale’s Tale Gifts, as well as additional help with the feast.

Tippman said, the Manning family and BC Fisheries are donating the crab and Oregon Hydrangea Co. is donating sirloins.

According to the competition calendar, the club’s robot must be completed, bagged and tagged by Feb. 20, and the team will travel to competitions in Wilsonville, Lake Oswego and Portland.
