Netflix produces ‘Bird Box’ in Del Norte County

The street next to the Crescent City Cultural Center is closed off to accommodate equipment trucks for the making of a movie.

Buses, film equipment trucks and actors’ trailers converged on the Crescent City Cultural Center for indoor filming of a Netflix movie featuring award-winning cast members.

Interim City Manager Eric Wier reported to the city council Monday that the center was being rented for the next four weeks to allow filming on rainy days.

“‘Bird Box’ is the name of the movie. It’s going to be starring Sandra Bullock and John Malkovich,” Wier said.

He said the crew will set up a base camp at the cultural center and use the building as a sound stage.

“When they use it, we’re going to have to shut down Front Street to accommodate this,” he said, adding that businesses in the area have been informed.

Wier said the production might bring about 300 people to the area — people who are staying at local motels, eating locally and bringing money to the community.

Publicist Will Casey said the closed-set production will film in the area for a few weeks but he couldn’t divulge more information. He said the production will not be holding media events during the filming.

While motorists slowed to look and some stood along Front Street sidewalks, no actual filming or cast members could be seen from the public vantage point. Security personnel stood at all entrances, as production staff moved equipment indoors from trucks.

By phone Wednesday, Wier said the city is excited to have the production in Crescent City and will endeavor to make the best experience possible for crew and cast.

About the movie

The movie “Bird Box” is about a woman and a pair of children who are blindfolded and forced to make their way through a post-apocalyptic setting along a river.

According to IMDb.com, the movie is directed by Susanne Bier and the screenplay is by Eric Heisserer.

The screenplay is based on the novel by Josh Malerman of the same title and is available at Amazon.com.

The synopsis of the book, according to Amazon: “Five years after (the apocalypse), a handful of scattered survivors remain, including Malorie (played by Sandra Bullock in the movie) and her two young children. Living in an abandoned house near the river, she has dreamed of fleeing to a place where they might be safe.

“Now, that the boy and girl are 4, it is time to go. But the journey ahead will be terrifying: 20 miles downriver in a rowboat — blindfolded — with nothing to rely on but her wits and the children’s trained ears. One wrong choice and they will die. And something is following them. But is it man, animal or monster?”
