“Miracle on 34th Street,” a classic Christmas play, will be performed by the Chetco Pelican Players beginning Friday, Dec. 8, at the Chetco Playhouse.
It’s Thanksgiving Day and Macy’s Department Store finds its Santa to be quite drunk. When the no-nonsense special events director Doris Walker (Kelly Scruggs) spies a jolly, bewhiskered old man (Dan McGlasson), she persuades him to take the inebriated Santas place.
He proves to be a real sensation, and while he is hearing children’s Christmas wishes, he identifies himself as Kris Kringle and claims to be Santa Claus.
Despite reassurances by Mr. Kringle’s doctor (Cathy Axel) that the old man is quite harmless, the store director maintains her cynical misgivings and particularly advises her young daughter Susan (Lily McCormick) to reject all such notions of silly beliefs and fantasies.
Seen as deluded and dangerous by Macy’s vocational counselor (Jon Smith), who plots to have Kris shanghaied to Bellevue Psychiatric Hospital, Kris ends up in a court competency hearing.
Many people, especially Susan, begin to notice there is something unusually special about Kris and his determination to advance the true spirit of Christmas amidst all the rampant commercialism.
Also in the cast is Tim Smith as Fred Gayley, Kathleen Teague as Shellhammer, Phillip Dolan as Judge Harper, Blake Dunbar as Mara, Ralph Dickey as Halloran, Richard Hall as Finley, Tommy Jones as Macy and Bill Schlichting as Gimble.
Performances are 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, Dec. 8, 9, 15 and 16, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10 and 17, at the Chetco Playhouse at 1240 Chetco Ave. in Brookings.
Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for students and available at Wright’s Custom Framing and Art Supplies in Brookings, New Wave Video in Harbor and at the door.
