Brookings-Harbor Friends of Music hosts Japanese violinist Mayuko Kamio in concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12.
Kamio, the gold medalist of the 2007 International Tchaikovsky Competition, was born in Osaka, Japan, in 1986, and began to play the violin at 4. She made her musical debut in Tokyo at age 10 in a concert broadcast on Japanese television.
Since then, she has appeared as soloist with the Boston Pops, and in collaboration with Mstislav Rostropovich and Zubin Mehta.
Recently she toured with the Israel Philharmonic, the Munich Philharmonic and the German SWR Symphony Orchestra. She has performed in New York, Washington, D.C., St. Petersburg, Moscow, Frankfurt, Warsaw and Tokyo.
She currently plays an Antonio Stradivari 1731 “Rubinoff” violin on loan from the Munetsugu collection.
Appearing with Kamio is pianist Maria Garcia.
Garcia began piano studies in her native Puerto Rico at the age of 4, making her debut with the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra at 10. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Music with distinction in performance from the New England Conservatory of Music and a master’s degree as well as doctoral studies from State University New York at Stony Brook.
An active chamber musician and soloist, Garcia has performed throughout the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Latin America with groups such as the Mark Morris Dance Company, her former Piano Trio Melànge, the Bamberg and Madagascar string quartets, Musical Chairs Ensemble and Poetica Musica.
As a teacher, she has served on the faculties of the Manhattan School of Music and other institutions.
Now living in Portland, she is best known as one half of the XX Digitus Piano Duo. She also has a private teaching studio in northeast Portland.
Kamio and Garcia’s program includes works by Mozart, Ravel, Brahms and Rachmaninoff.
The concert is at the Brookings Seventh-day Adventist Church at 102 Park Ave.
Adult tickets are $20. Season tickets are also available. Students younger than 18 are admitted free.
