"The Importance of Being Earnest" opens

Algernon Moncrieff (Austin Sanders), left, and Jon Worthing (Aaron Axel) vie for the affections of Gwendoline Fairfax (Bethy Myers).

Ellensburg Theater Company presents the Oscar Wilde play “The Importance of Being Earnest” at the Rogue Playhouse for a two-weekend run starting Friday, Feb. 9.

The play is produced by Avi Gaston and directed by Bethy Myers who are collaborating as part of their senior project at Gold Beach High School. They are in the cast, as well.

Gaston said she and Myers read Wilde’s work in their English class and decided it would be a perfect senior project.

“We absolutely loved it. The whole identity confusion lead-up was hilarious and we knew we had to do it,” Gaston said. “It’s been a tough journey with all the details, but it’s all coming together.”

Myers agrees about the satiric nature of “The Importance of Being Earnest” and anticipates a great show.

“It’s our baby and it has been a labor of love,” Myers said. “The cast we have assembled is amazing, and all the help we have received along the way has been invaluable.”

The plot centers around two young gentlemen living in England circa 1890s who fall in love with the same woman but encounter problems due to an invented brother named Earnest. Mistaken identities follow with comedy close behind.

Aaron Axel plays the lead role of Jon Worthing, Gini Christosen is Miss Prism, Gaston is Cecily Cardew, Mark Lanier is De Chasuble, Myers is Gwendoline Fairfax, Austin Sanders is Algernon Moncrieff, Tim Scullen in the dual roles of Lane and Merriman, and Anne Tlaker plays Lady Bracknell.

Mentoring Gaston and Myers in their first production are stage veterans Gigi Hodges and Michael Hall.

“The Importance of Being Earnest” plays at 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, Feb. 9, 10, 16 and 17, and 2 p.m. and Sundays, Feb. 11 and 18.

Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students. For reservations, call 541-247-4382 or 541-247-5109.

The Rogue Playhouse is at 94196 Moore St. in Gold Beach.
