Gold Beach andndash; The 5th Annual "Bike the Rogue" bicycling event takes place Saturday, Sept. 6, at Buffington Park in Gold Beach.
The event offers three different rides: 25 miles/1,100 vertical feet ($30 entry fee); 40 miles/2,000 vertical feet ($40); and 100km/62.5 miles/3,000 vertical feet ($50). All three routes follow the banks of the Rogue River.
Both the 40 mile and the 100 kilometer rides include seven miles along the Pacific Ocean, with panoramic views of beaches, sea stacks, and rugged coastline. Each rider's entrance fee includes a free ticket to the Gold Beach Brew Fest, a $15 value, which is taking place the same day as the bicycling event.
The Brew Fest features a wide selection of microbrews from all over Oregon. Musicians will perform on two stages until 10 p.m.
Registration for Bike the Rogue starts at 7 a.m. in Buffington Park. The entrance to the park is three blocks east of Highway 101 on Gauntlet Street in Gold Beach.
Anyone pre-registering with a postmark before Sept. 1 receives $5 off the entry fee per rider. Registration and waiver forms are available at the Bike the Rogue website: http://goldbeachrotary.com/service-projects/local-projects/bike-the-rogue.
Hosted by Rotary and community volunteers, generous, well-stocked rest stations provide toasted bagels with peanut butter or cream cheese, fruit, and water at the start of the event, and a wide variety of snacks and water every 7 to 15 miles along the route. At the end of the route each rider is treated to a root beer float. Bathrooms are available in Buffington Park at the start and finish of the event, as well as at the 11 mile point, 32 mile point, and 51 mile point.
The Rotary Club of Gold Beach sponsors Bike the Rogue, in collaboration with Gold Beach Soroptimist, who host the Brew Fest and donate 50 percent of the ticket price to Bike the Rogue, and South Coast Bicycles in Bandon, which provides the sag wagon (a support vehicle for cyclists) stocked with spare parts and a technician to assist with any mechanical problems. Umpqua Bank of Gold Beach donates the reusable, logoed backpacks, and Clif Bars Co. donates an assortment of energy bars to the event.
This is a safety-first event and bicycle helmets are required. For additional information about Bike the Rogue, visit the Bike the Rogue website at http://goldbeachrotary.com/service-projects/local-projects/bike-the-rogue or contact Bryan Grummon at email@example.com .
