Entering Friday's Funky Foot Race at the Port of Brookings-Harbor, Hanna Leonard, a Brookings-Harbor High School junior, had run a half-marathon just once in her life. Just under two hours later, the 16-year-old crossed the finish line a mere 16 seconds ahead of her closest competitor to win the 13-mile race.
"I'm really happy and ecstatic. The last time I ran one I got 15th place so this was a big improvement," said Leonard. "This is the first time I've ever won a race this big."
In addiiton to the half-marathon, the third annual Funky Foot Race and Kids Boardwalk Dash included 5K, 10K and a kids sprint/potato sack race. Nearly 80 runners competed in the event that benefited the Wounded Warrior Project.
"I think it turned out great and the turnout was awesome," said event director Christine Parkhurst, who states competitors from as far away as Wisconsin entered the race.
"I like the area, it's beautiful," said 5K race winner Mark Salisbury of Salt Lake City, who was vacationing with his family.
"It isn't an easy course. It's got some hills. I don't think there is a flat place to run out here. I've been running here the past few days and it's all hills."
"I loved it," said Matthew Pillman of Menomoni, Wisconsin. "I love the hills and getting the nice, cool breeze and the atmosphere was great. I thought it was wonderful."
