Both Joshua Hannan and Hayden Rosecrans, of the Brookings-Harbor/Del Norte Mat Club, earned three medals each while wrestling in regional and national meets in June.
Hannan, a 9-year-old wrestling in the 65 pounds intermidiate class, placed seventh in the Greco discipline at the 2014 ASICS Kids Nationals tournament June 23-25 in Orem, Utah, one of the most competitive and prestigious youth wrestling events in the nation.
Hannan also placed fourth in freestyle, and took home a bronze medal for a third-place finish in the folkstyle (collegiate) discipline at the 2014 West Kids/Cadet/Junior regional meet June 15-21 in Pocatello, Idaho.
"It's a pretty prestigious tournament and to place third and fourth in two of his three events, we're pretty stoked about that," said Hannan's father Tony. "Just to get on the podium at this level is something special."
Rosencrans, who wrestled in the 50 pound bantam division at 7 years old, placed in the top five in all three disciplines over the two meets. He placed fourth in folkstyle and fifth in freestyle at the Idaho regionals and placed fifth in Greco at the national meet a few days later.
BH/DN Mat Club wrestlers Billy Lewis and Eddie Hartwick competed but did not place in their respective weight classes.
According to Tony Hannan, the competition at the two meets was fierce as the top youth wrestlers from across the nation participated.
"They went there to wrestle the tough kids and they saw them," said the elder Hannan.
Their performances have both ranked high in their weight class on trackwrestling.com . Hannan (52-21, 24 pins) is ranked in the top 10-percent of 65-pound intermidiate class. Rosencrans (37-21, 20 pins) is in the top 20-percent of the 50-pound bantam class.
