The Bruins basketball teams took advantage of a bye on Tuesday to get some extra practice for key games at home Friday against the Sutherlin Bulldogs.
"The varsity girls are hosting the biggest game of the season when Sutherlin comes to town this Friday," said BHHS athletic director and coach Buell Gonzales. "Come out and support your Lady Bruins!"
Sutherlin is the No. 1 ranked team in the state, with a Far West League record of 6-0, and 17-0 overall. The Bruins are in second place and rank No. 5 with a league record of 5-1.
The tipoff is 6 p.m.
In the weeks leading up to Friday's game, the Lady Bruins beat North Bend 71-34 on Jan. 21, and then defeated South Umpqua 70-26 on Jan. 24.
The Bruin JV girls team play against Suthernlin at 4:15 p.m. at the Kalmiopsis Elementary School gym.
The Bruin JV2 girls play at 3:30 p.m. today (Jan. 29) in Gold Beach.
Victory this Friday is paramount for the Bruins varsity team, the No. 2 ranked team in the state.
"The boys need this win if they want to stay in the hunt for a league championship," Gonzales said.
The Bruins defeated Sutherlin by two points in their first matchup earlier this season.
Last week, the Bruins went 1-2, losing 65-74 at home to North Bend on Jan. 21, and then beating South Umpqua 57-66 on Jan. 24. On Saturday, the boys lost 61-82 to North Valley in a non-league game.
The Bruin JV boys play in Gold Beach at 5 p.m. today (Jan. 29). The team plays at home against Sutherlin at 4:15 p.m. Friday in the BHHS gym.
The Bruin JV2 boys have a one-day, two-game tourney at Marshfield on Saturday, Feb. 1. Game time to be announced.
"Wrestling is having a solid season. Despite their low numbers they are competing and winning a few league duels," Gonzales said.
The Bruin grapplers were at Marshfield for a league three-way and competed well, he said. Next, they will compete Feb. 1 at the La Pine Invitational.
The Bruin cheerleading squad took first at their first competition of the season on Saturday. On Sunday, the team placed fourth at Eugene in a tough division. They scored a total of 63, which is only 5 points lower than their score at the state championship last year.
"Coach Willis is very optimistic about this year's team. Good luck ladies," Buell said.
