It could probably have been a one-and-done kind of afternoon for the Brookings-Harbor High School girls and boys soccer teams - they should have scored one goal and allowed the Lancers of South Umpqua the chance to retire from the field with some dignity.

Instead, the Lancers battled and went home defeated as the boys team put 13 goals in the net and the girls put 11 scores in the goal.

"They played excellent," girls' Head Coach Fernando Villa said of the Lady Bruins. "It took them a little while to get warmed up but after they did it was game over."

Both teams spread the goals out amongst the players, but two players stood out with the number of assists they had.

Derek Hodge had five assists for the boys team while Hannah Baron had assists on four of the first five Lady Bruins' goals.

Goal scorers for the boys team included four goals from senior Wyatt Aldrich and a hat trick from senior captain David Joyce. On the girls' side, senior Jade Heredia had five goals and Molly Joyce had two while other Bruins claimed the remainder.

"We played good today," boys Head Coach Gabriel Anaya said. "We knew we were going to win the game, so we tried to keep possession of the ball and tried to score with great passing and communication."

The Lady Bruins honored their senior players because it was their last home game of the season, but the boys team will host Pacific at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday for its final home game of the regular season.
