The Brookings-Harbor High School boys and girls cross country teams took second place behind Arcata High School during Saturday's Brookings-Harbor Invitational cross country meet.

"I'm really excited by how the teams ran today," Head Coach Terry Axel said. "I know that some of the runners were disappointed by their times but they keep working hard and they're getting better."

The boys team was led by sophomore Chris Burton who turned in a time of 17:30.77 for third place.

"I'm a bit disappointed that I didn't place first," Burton said. "I'm more than capable of running better than I did. Something just didn't click today."

Juniors Shaine Graham (18:18.52) and Brandon Smalley (18:40.48) rounded out the top three for the Bruins.

The girls were led by freshman Deborah Lawrence, whose personal best time of 21:25.78 also netted her a third-place finish.

"I'm pretty happy with it," Lawrence said. "I felt like I had a little bit too much left in the end, but I tried to pace myself through the whole race."

Junior Molly Joyce (22:59.72) and sophomore Jessie Goode (25:55.55) rounded out the top three for the Lady Bruins.

The cross country team competed Tuesday (results were unavailable at press time) and will run in the Prefontaine Memorial Run on Saturday.
