With the first day of competition out of the way at the OSAA 4A State Track and Field championships the Brookings-Harbor High School Bruins have not qualified for the finals in any of the four events in which they competed. Despite the failure to qualify, the Bruins still have three events to go.

Junior David Joyce posted a time of 11.70 in the 100-meter dash, which was just .13 seconds off the eighth-place qualifying mark of 11.57 seconds.

Joyce also competed in the 200-meter dash on Friday and ran the distance in a time of 23.14 which was just .04 seconds outside the qualifying mark. Joyce shaved a significant amount of time off his previous personal best time of 23.23 set at the Far West League championships, but it wasn't enough to get him into the finals. Joyce will have two more chances to compete today as the anchor leg in the boys 4x100-meter relay and second-leg runner in the 4x400-meter relay.

The only other Bruin to compete on Friday was sophomore Shaine Graham in the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles. Graham turned in a time of 16.01 which found him in ninth place after the preliminary heats and out of the finals. The time, which was .57 seconds off a qualifying mark, and just .03 seconds off his personal best.

Graham also failed to qualify in the 300-meter hurdles, running a time of 42.36 and finishing in 12th place. Graham's best time in the 300-meter hurdles is almost one second faster and, according to hurdle's coach Kathy Axel, Graham may have had a couple of missteps that cost him some valuable time.

Graham will have one more opportunity to compete today as one leg of the boys 4x400-meter relay.

The final individual competitor for the Bruins today will be Shaylin Curtis who will run the 1,500-meter race at 1:18 p.m. Curtis is ranked among the top eight runners competing today and her personal best time of 5:07.14 could find her on the medal stand at the end of the day.

Both of the boys relay teams will compete today with the 4x100-meter team scheduled for 12:30 and the 4x400 team scheduled to run at 5:06 p.m.
