BHHS girls and boys track take second at Icebreaker
The Brookings-Harbor High School boys and girls track teams both took second in the Brookings-Harbor Ice Breaker track and field meet on Tuesday.
In both cases the Bruins were behind cross-border rivals Del Norte.
"They just had a lot more kids competing," distance coach Terry Axel said. "They take all the second and third spots because they have so many competitors."
Despite the second-place finish, Head Coach Jim Keys was pleased with the way the Bruins performed.
"It feels great to get it out of the way," he said. "The kids need this, it's a dress rehearsal. They did great. They've been working hard in practice for the last two weeks."
Freshman Chris Burton exploded in the final 200 meters of the 3000-meter race to overtake the race leader from Del Norte's Omar Leal and win with a time of 10:38.37.
"It feels pretty good. I wasn't expecting it," Burton said. "I was doing my best and I had excellent coaching the entire race."
Other top finishes include the boys 4x100 and 4x400-meter relay teams' first-place finish; Cody Enos, first in the 800-meter race; and Brandi Rodgers first in both discus and javelin.
