The Brookings-Harbor High School basketball teams took some time between the boys and girls basketball games on Friday night to honor those of their loved ones who are battling cancer or who have lost the fight to cancer by having a cancer awareness night.
Both Bruins teams were adorned in special "Pink Ribbon" jerseys that are part of a traveling jersey program that allows multiple schools to use the same jerseys on a rotating basis for cancer awareness nights.
The Bruins used the special night to claim convincing victories over the Lancers of South Umpqua.
Girls basketball defeats Lancers 73-18
"Gold, gold, gold!" Those words shouted from the Lady Bruins sideline seem to strike fear into the hearts of many BHHS girls basketball team opponents, and rightly so. When the Bruins use their "gold" defense they typically hold theiropponents to less than 10 points per quarter and Friday night was no different.
"I thought they played really well," Head Coach Chris Schofield said of the win. "Defensive pressure was big for us."
The Bruins out-scored the Lady Lancers 20-4 in the first quarter, 14-9 in the second, 19-0 in the third and 20-5 in the fourth.
According to Schofield it can be hard to know when to call it off.
"We don't want to call it off too soon and have them score, and then beat us," he said.
The Bruins will have a chance to use their high-pressure defense again on Friday when they travel to Sutherlin to face the Bulldogs.
Boys basketball defeats Lancers 69-54
In commanding fashion the BHHS boys team showed the 8th-ranked Lancers that they are a team to be reckoned with.
The Bruins out-scored the Lancers in every quarter and out-hustled them the entire game.
"We were tired of not putting four quarters together for a full game," Head Coach Matt Simpson said. "They're a good team but our guys executed really well."
The Bruins stymied the Lancers on the defensive end and as the defense provided turnovers, the offense capitalized by scoring with apparent ease.
The Bruins will travel next Friday to take on the Sutherlin Bulldogs.
