BHHS honors 7 standouts

Some were short and some were long, but all were heartfelt as seven former Brookings-Harbor High School athletes made acceptance speeches after being honored with Hall of Fame inductions on Saturday night.

Their achievments ranged from district championships to state championships to Olympic hopefuls, while the sports ranged from cross country, to football, to wrestling, to track.

Friends and family from all over the United States gathered to honor the inductees at the Chetco Activity Center on Saturday night with a social hour and a banquet dinner.

The evening was emceed by local radio celebrity Kevin Bane who kept the laughs andndash; and the speeches andndash; moving.

Each of the inductees were introduced by a coach or friend who extolled their virtues as an athlete, a scholar and a citizen and detailed their accomplishements.

Each of the alumni then took a moment to speak and thank those who made it possible for their achievments.

Lee Musser, state champion in the 120-yard high hurdles and the 180-yard low hurdles in 1967, four-year letterman in football, basketball and track.

Herb Reiling (Arlandson), state champion wrestler in 1969 and 1968, four-year letterman in wrestling.

Channon Payne, state champion in the 220-yard dash in 1970, first team all-state in 1970, three-year letterman in football and track, lettered once in basketball and baseball.

Jeff Boak, cross country state champion in 1973 andndash; set the state record andndash; and was a four year letterman in three sports, as well as the 1974 BHHS Athlete of the Year.

Nikki Becker, state champion javelin thrower, 1988 and 1989, four-year letterman in track and cross country.

Inger Appanaitis, state champion discus thrower in 2003, All-State track team member and competed in the 2008 Olympic trials.

Scott Sanders, six-time state champion in cross country, 2003 and 2004; 1,500-meter, 2004 and 2005; 3,000-meter in 2004 and 2005; holds school record for boys 1,500, 1,600, and 3,000 and was named the 2005 Oregon Sports Writers Steve Prefontaine award winner for outstanding distance runner in Oregon.

Each of the hall-of-fame inductees was honored with a plaque and will have their achievments placed in the BHHS Hall of Fame display at the high school.
