Light rain fell, but it wasn't enough to shut down the Bruins in their 3-1 victory over the visiting Vikings of Siuslaw.

In what was termed by a BHHS assistant coach as a battle of the mound, starting pitcher A.J. Briganti pitched seven full innings; striking out seven and walking five, while only giving up one run on just one hit.

"It felt good," Briganti said of his complete game. "I'm a little sore, but good."

Briganti ran into some trouble in the third and fourth innings but was able to pitch out of it to avoid being pulled by Head Coach Darrel Nelson.

"I focused on fundamentals," Briganti said of pitching out of trouble. "I listen to coach and pitch downhill."

The Bruins improve to 3-1 in league and 8-2 overall with the win and are tied for first place in the Far West League. Siuslaw falls out of first into a tie for second place with North Bend.

"That's a quality club," Nelson said of Siuslaw following the game. "Both pitchers were dominant, but we had a couple of big hits to get the win."

The Vikings' starter pitched nine strike outs but couldn't control all the Bruins' bats as Bryce Aldrich and Izak Ehlers hit a pair of doubles, and Corwin Farquhar hit a looping single to score two runs in the bottom of the fourth.

"It felt good," Ehlers said of his double. "As soon as I made contact, I knew it was going to fall into the gap in right-center."

The Bruins' first run came in the second inning after Ehlers hit a single, stole second and advanced to third on a pass ball.

Ronnie Manley took a base on balls and steals second. While trying to throw Manley out the Vikings' catcher overthrows second base and Ehlers scores.

The Bruins' victory follows a split doubleheader on Friday where Senior Trevor Gallian threw a full seven innings in the first game for the 3-1 victory. Gallian struck out 11 batters and only walked two.

"It's what we knew he could do," Nelson said of Gallian's performance. "He is a strong pitcher and we're glad to have him where he's at."

The Bruins' next game is on the road at Sutherlin on Friday. The double header is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. Sutherlin is 1-3 in league and currently in fifth place.
