Rotary Invitational sets stage for records

The Brookings-Harbor High School track team hosted its second home meet of the season on Saturday, and while both the girls and boys teams were unable to break the top three in team scores, a number of individuals set personal records in individual events.

"It felt really good," senior Chandler Gotfried said of his personal best throw of 170-4 feet. "It felt like I've accomplished something, but there is still room to improve."

The throw was good enough to claim second place overall, and just 10 feet short of the first-place throw of 180-8.

The current automatic qualifying distance for making the state championships in javelin is 183 feet.

"It says that I still have a lot of work to do to get higher up there," Gotfried said. "As time moves on, people are going to improve and I'll have to improve, too."

Senior John Joyce also set a personal record in the 100-meter dash and was part of the 4x100-meter relay team that set a new best, as well.

"It feels really good," Joyce said of the 100-meter dash. "I wish there were more Brookings guys running with me in the last heat there, because as a team we'd be doing better at the meets if there were more people in the final heats."

With regard to the relay team, Joyce explained that the addition of Tyree Dingle has sped the team up and even though they've only had a week of practice together, they should get better.

"Our 4x100 team will be pretty good by the end of the year."

The relay team's time of 46.25 was good enough for a second-place finish just behind North Bend High School's time of 45.20.

The team's time has them sitting in third place in the Far West League for fastest times behind North Bend and Douglas and, according to Joyce, the more they work on baton passing, the faster they will get.

On the girls side of the team notable personal records were set by a number of throwers and throwing coach Terry Axel attributes that to the throwing clinic that the athletes participated in on Friday.

"It's all because of the stuff they learned at the clinic," Axel said. "Even (Anderberg), who missed the clinic but I was able to teach a couple of things to, improved.

"It was a really great experience for the kids to get to work with such great throwing coaches."

Samantha Hage set a personal record in the shot put with a seventh-place throw of 27-6.

Lakota Hatcher and Brandi Rodgers both set personal records in the javelin with throws of 85-2 and 96-2 respectively.

Rodgers' toss was good enough to put her in fourth place, just 2 feet out of third place overall for the meet.

While a number of individuals hit personal highs, the team scores only reflected the quality of the competition as the boys' team took fourth with a score of 82.5 to the first-place score of 184.5, set by Marshfield.

The girls' team took fifth with a score of 47 to the Marshfield girls' team score of 222.

The Bruins next scheduled track meet is set for Saturday, Apr. 14, in Glide.
