Boys track captures third at Del Norte meet

The rain held off just long enough on Wednesday afternoon for the runners to leg out one more lap and jumpers to soar through the air as they tried to eke an extra inch out of the pits during the Humboldt Del Norte League track meet in Crescent City.

The boys' team claimed 71 points to take third place, but couldn't overcome the sheer numbers of Fortuna and McKinleyville who took first and second with 123 and 85 points respectively.

The girls' team, whose numbers were reduced by illness and vacation for the spring break holiday was able to claim just 26 team points and finished fifth behind Arcata, 138.33; Del Norte, 133; Fortuna, 98.66 and McKinleyville, 55.

A number of Bruins set personal records including Brandi Rodgers and Kaitlyn Mitts in the discus.

"I feel really good about it, especially with the wind," Rodgers said of her 73-2 throw. "The wind made it more difficult today because it was against us, but Kaitlyn and I pulled through and we did pretty good."

Mitts threw just behind Rodgers with 72-3. The distances were enough to claim sixth and seventh place respectively.

Throwing coach Terry Axel was pleased with how the two girls, and the rest of the throwing team, performed.

"They're young, good natured and hard working," he said. "I'm excited with where we're at."

The boys' 4x100-meter relay team, made up of Gabe Brazelton, Chandler Gotfried, Cole Kellum and John Joyce, also performed well, and almost pulled off a Cinderella-esque comeback.

On the second leg of the race, Kellum twisted an ankle causing the team to drop into seventh place. Gotfried, running the third leg, made up ground and moved the team into fourth before handing the baton to Joyce who ran the anchor leg.

Joyce exploded down the back stretch, pulled into second, but ran out of room before he could catch the anchor from Fortuna and finished less than a second out of first place with a time of 47.55.
