Lady Bruins struggle in 41-33 victory

The Brookings-Harbor High School varsity girls basketball team was limited Tuesday night to just 41 points as they defeated the visiting Lady Bulldogs by 7.

The high pressure defense that marks the girls' basketball team was notably absent on Tuesday due to a shortage of eligble players on the Bruin bench.

"We're really thin right now," Head Coach Chris Schofield said. "This is the second game in a row we've had to play with just seven girls.

Injuries, grades and honor code issues have decimated the Lady Bruins' ranks but Schofield is optimistic for the future.

"We hope that, at some point this year, we get everybody healthy and back in the lineup," he said. "But, we're getting some good minutes for some of the younger girls."

The Bruins were led in victory by Mallory McDonald with 17 points, who was closely followed by Iva Hart with 12.

Other Lady Bruins contributing to the victory included Jordyn Keys with 5; Brianna Juarez, 3; and Courtney Kay and Whitney Floyd with 2 points each.

The Lady Bruins travel to Siuslaw on Friday to take on the Lady Vikings. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Boys lose tough one 39-70

"I thought we played really well for the first three quarters," boys basketball Head Coach Jon Young said after Tuesday night's 39-70 loss against the North Bend Bulldogs.

"A team like that, you try and keep up with them and hope they make mistakes down the stretch," he added.

The Bruins opened the game with a first quarter that showed they could do just as their coach desired; keep up with the Bulldogs.

But a breakdown on defense led to North Bend pulling away in the fourth quarter according to Young.

"We really stress team defense here," he said. "It wasn't just one person, we broke down defensively as a team."

Senior Nick Corpening led the Bruins with 14 points, but was blanked in the fourth when the Bruins could have used the points the most.

The Bruins only scored 6 points in the fourth quarter to the Bulldogs' 23.

Other Bruins with money in the bucket included: Chandler Gottfried, 8; Calvin Watwood, 6; Ronnie Manley and Alex Pate, 4 points each; and Tyler Wood, 3.

The Bruins travel to take on the Siuslaw Vikings at 7:30 p.m., on Friday.
