Lady Bruins win first two games of Phoenix Invitational

The Brookings-Harbor High School girls team has ridden the shooting of senior Kambri Coleman right into the finals of the Phoenix Invitational Tournament and looks to capture top honors when they face Cascade Christian today at 3 p.m.

The Lady Bruins defeated the Crusaders of St. Mary's, Medford, 65-56 on Thursday, before moving on to demolish the Rogue River Chieftains, 64-34.

Coleman had 22 points in the first game and got the necessary help from point guard Mallory McDonald who had 14 points and claimed 75 percent from the free throw line on 8-of-12 shooting.

Brianna Juarez added just 6 points to the total, but had a team high 14 rebounds to help the Lady Bruins to the victory.

In the second game Coleman had 32 points, nailing six 3-pointers, hitting five deuces and shooting a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.

"She shot well," Head Coach Chris Schofield said. "She's been getting better and better but tonight, you could see the light click on for her."

Lakota Hatcher added 10 points and Whitney Floyd contributed 9.

Schofield was not only pleased with the offensive effort, but praised the defense as well.

"We held their top shooter, Alli Ehrhardt, to just 13 points," he said. "She was tough, but we were tougher."

The full-court press that the Lady Bruins use regularly was also a contributing factor to the win, according to Schofield.

"We used pressure on defense," he said. "And, we got out and ran because we didn't think they were that deep.

"Each game we're extending the wall that each girl hits every night and pushing the fatigue further into the game."

The Bruins will face Cascade Christian at 3 p.m. in the championship game.
