The Azalea Middle School seventh grade girls' squad overcame a first-round loss to Ferndale on Friday night and claimed third place with two decisive victories in the Fortuna Invitational Tournament on Saturday.
"I think we could beat Ferndale," seventh grade Head Coach Kristy Kleespies said. "If the playing field was level."
Friday nights loss didn't keep the Bruins from winning by a 48-point combined margin on Saturday though.
The Bruins defeated Redway Middle School 30-9 in a 9 a.m. game, and put down the Redwood Raiders 38-11.
It was the second time in a week that the Bruins and Raiders had faced off and Kleespies was pleased with the increased margin of victory.
"We played much better the second time we faced them," she said. "I was really happy with the victory."
Siena Worthey and Kylie Johnson both had six points in the Redway game, while Joci Kay and Brooklyn Hiller each put up four.
"It feels good," Hiller said of winning third place. "I can do a lot better, but it feels good to take third."
Worthey led the team in points for the Redwood game, scoring eight, and was closely followed by Jolene Ryan and Hiller with six points each.
