Brookings brawlers compete in mixed martial arts and tuff guy brouhaha

Fighters from all over the West Coast descended on Trinidad, Calif., to try and be the toughest men andndash; and women andndash; left standing in the ring.

So You Wanna Fight promotions put on the fight night at the Cher-Ae Heights casino on Saturday night to a packed house and a full triple card of fighters.

Included in those fighters were local Brookings mixed martial artists Andy Frost and Justin Rafferty, and boxer Antoine Roberson.

Frost, fighting in the 146-pound division, defeated Brendon Phelps from Eureka with a rear-naked choke at 1:30 into the first round.

Frost came out strong and caught a couple of knees to the body and one to the face that bloodied his nose, but was able to submit Phelps in decisive fashion.

"When I started bleeding it flipped a switch," Frost said. "As I put the choke on, I was just thinking squeeze."

The second fight of the night for Frost would end even quicker but with the Brookings' fighter on the losing end of a guillotine choke applied by South Humboldt's David August. August would defeat Ryan Sherbourne of Crescent City in the finals to take the championship home.

Rafferty had to withdraw from the fights after a last-minute injury disqualified him.

Roberson, boxing in the 186-pound weight class had a bye in the first round and was able to leverage that rest time to his advantage when he faced Sam Cid of Keizer in the title round.

Roberson dominated the fight, landing punches with will to the body and face of Cid, but was unable to get a knockout. A unanimous decision from the judges awarded Roberson the win.

The next fight night is scheduled for April 2012 at Cher-Ae Heights Casino in Trinidad, Calif.
