The varsity Lady Bruins shut down the Marshfield Pirates for the first four innings of play and held on to an 8-4 win Thursday afternoon for their first win of the season.

andquot;We're really starting to improve and show what we're capable of,andquot; said Coach Steve Padilla. andquot;And we started to swing the bats like we know we can.andquot;

The Bruins (1-3) jumped out to an early start and scored three runs in the top of the first.

With the bases loaded, Jennifer Jones came up with a big two RBI knock that scored Jessie Goergen and Brooke Blofsky.

The Bruins added a single run in the second inning and another in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead.

With Goergen on the mound, the Bruins were able to hold the Pirates scoreless until they notched a lone run in the fifth.

In the sixth inning, the Bruins added three more runs and extended their lead to a comfortable 8-1 margin.

The Pirates managed to score three more runs in the final two innings, but it was not enough as the Bruins were able to hold on for the victory.

The JV squad also played their best game of the year with a 15-6 win over the Pirates.

andquot;The whole team was doing a good job with pitch selection and getting on base,andquot; said Coach Kelly Garvin. andquot;They showed up to play.andquot;

After the Bruins jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead, the Pirates overtook them with five runs in the bottom of the first.

But after only allowing one more run, the Bruins held the Pirates scoreless after the third inning while the Bruins continued to rack up runs.

The varsity squad has a double header against Del Norte at home on Saturday, March 24, at noon, while the JV squad travels to North Valley for a doubleheader.
