The Bruins used a pair of four-run innings to propel themselves to an 8-1 victory over the Marshfield Pirates Thursday in Coos Bay.
andquot;We started out slow, a little over-anxious,andquot; said Coach Pat Berkowitz. andquot;But we made adjustments and started out the third with some small ball.andquot;
John Kennedy led off the inning with a walk after being down with two strikes.
Nick Morris then laid down a sacrifice bunt with two strikes to advance Kennedy to second.
andquot;We were able to execute a bunt, unlike against Rogue River,andquot; said Berkowitz.
Ryan LaThorpe used an infield hit and a stolen base to give the Bruins runners at second and third with only one out.
Then Adam Ehlers stepped up to the plate and launched a double to left center that scored Kennedy.
Anthony Longo knocked in LaThorpe with a single and two batters later, Tyler Parke stepped up and singled in Ehlers and Longo for the 4-0 lead.
The Pirates scored their lone run in the bottom of the third, but the Bruins answered back with four more runs in the top of the fifth.
Ehlers started off the inning with a triple off the wall and was then knocked in by Longo.
Back-to-back singles by Derek Nelson and Parke loaded the bases for Josh Pruden.
Pruden sat back and waited for the perfect pitch, but when it failed to come, he took the walk, scoring Longo from third.
Chase Bansemer stepped up and cracked an RBI single, scoring Nelson and keeping the bases loaded.
During the next at bat, Parke hustled home on a wild pitch, scoring the Bruins' final run in their 8-1 win.
Nick Taresh also notched his first hit of the year in the top of the seventh inning.
Nelson started the game for the Bruins and went three innings, giving up three hits and the lone Pirate run.
Ehlers relieved Nelson and pitched three innings, allowing two hits and striking out six.
And Parke finished the job for the Bruins, throwing the final inning and striking out a pair of Pirate batters.
andquot;Our pitching continues to be stellar,andquot; said Berkowitz. andquot;And overall, out defense was good as well.andquot;
The Bruins are next in action in a doubleheader at Junction City on Monday, March 26, at noon. The following day, the Bruins play a lone game at Cottage Grove at noon.
