The Bruin throwers just got a little better this week.

Not because of hours of extra practice, but because of a little expertise.

Members of the Brookings-Harbor High School track team spent two days this week learning from a nationally certified throwing coach.

Gary Kosikowski, also known as andquot;Coach K,andquot; put on a free clinic for the throwers, teaching the mechanics of throwing the shot put, discus and javelin.

andquot;He's showing them techniques that I haven't learned yet,andquot; said throwing coach Terry Axel. andquot;This is as good for me as it is for them.andquot;

Axel is the cross country and distance coach, but has had to learn how to be a throwing coach.

andquot;I call myself a sorry throwing coach,andquot; said Axel. andquot;I was learning right along with Inger (Appanaitis) when she was a freshman.andquot;

Kosikowski is teaching the coaches how to coach just as much as he is teaching the kids how to throw.

andquot;We try to make it as difficult as we can for the coaches so they can make it easier for the kids,andquot; said Kosikowski.

The Bruin throwers, along with a few members of the Gold Beach and Del Norte track team, followed the teachings of Kosikowski in drills dealing with balance, coordination, power and overall technique.

andquot;He helped me a lot with my balance,andquot; said senior Mike Chambers, andquot;showing me where I should be and how I should be balanced when I'm there.andquot;

Kosikowski, who is also a nationally certified track and field official, helped the throwers fine tune their posture, form and release.

andquot;A lot of what he's doing is little fix-it things,andquot; said Axel. andquot;I saw him fix things and improve someone's throw within 15 minutes.andquot;

Kosikowski has been coaching and putting on throwing clinics for the past 14 years and has been coaching at 4A Molalla High School for the past six years.

andquot;We're lucky to get this kind of coaching experience to tune us up,andquot; said Chuck Chambers, Mike's father, who has been helping with the throwers this year.

The Bruins have a history of having several competitive throwers, but with the added expertise of Kosikowski, the Bruins have a chance to send four different throwers to the state meet this year.
