Recent Brookings-Harbor High School graduate Chris Althof will be participating in the 55th annual Oregon East-West Shrine Football Game this weekend on Saturday, Aug. 4, in Baker City.
Althof, the lone Bruin representative, along with four other players from the Far West League, will join other football standouts from across the state to show their football prowess and to help raise money for a worthy cause.
The Shriners All-Star game is the number one fundraiser for the organization in Oregon, raising over $87,000 in last year's game.
In the 54 year history of the game, it has raised well over 2.5 million dollars for the children's hospitals.
Althof, who was selected as the Defensive MVP for the Far West League last year, will be starting at defensive end for the west squad.
andquot;I'm pretty excited,andquot; Althof said. andquot;Everybody I'm playing with is really good and they're all here for a purpose. No one's going to quit and everyone's going to play hard.andquot;
Players have been working out and making public appearances since last Thursday.
Althof is rooming with Zach Anderson of Yamhill-Carlton, a First Team All-State quarterback, and Jordan Aldredge of Gladstone, a Second Team All-State running back, both of whom will start on offense for the west team.
andquot;The whole team is actually really close and we're bonding really well,andquot; Althof said. andquot;We haven't practiced against the other team yet, but I know we're working really hard and we'll just see what happens come game time.andquot;
In the fall, Althof will be attending Southwestern Oregon Community College to take classes, with plans to transfer to Western Oregon University in the spring and play football for the Wolves in the fall.
For the third year in a row, the East-West All-Star game will be televised in five states by Fox Sports Northwest. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
The East holds the overall edge in the game's history, with a 29-22 record over the West, with three ties.
