The Brookings-Harbor High School girls' soccer team rallied from a one-goal deficit to defeat the Umpqua Valley Christian Monarchs 2-1 Thursday in Roseburg and keep their undefeated record.

andquot;This is the first time that we've been down and had to play under adversity,andquot; Coach Paul Angove said. andquot;But we played well and we battled. They were by far the best team we've seen all year.andquot;

In the fourth minute, the Monarchs (2-1-1) got on the board via a corner kick and a header to take an early 1-0 lead.

andquot;It just sucked the air out of us,andquot; Angove said. andquot;But we were finally able to wear them down and get lots of opportunities.andquot;

The Bruins (4-0) knotted the game at 1-1 in the 35th minute as Jessie Goergen scored with an assist from Molly Moncrief.

In the second half, the Bruins were able to keep the pressure on the Monarchs and shut down their opponents.

andquot;We came out and really out played them in the second half,andquot; Angove said. andquot;They (Monarchs) passed the ball and moved well, but our defense didn't give them anything.andquot;

WIth only two minutes left in the game, Ashley Juarez broke the tie with her fourth goal of the season as she one-timed a shot into the back of the net off of a Goergen deflection to give the Bruins a 2-1 victory.

The Bruin offense outshot the Monarchs 27-3 while the Bruin defense continued to play well and have only allowed two goals in four games.

With their undefeated record, the Bruins sit atop the Far West League standings as they set to play Sutherlin, who beat the Bruins three times last year, on Tuesday, Sept. 25 at home.

The varsity game starts at 4:30 p.m. while the JV squad travels to Illinois Valley on Monday, Sept. 24 at 4 p.m.
