The Brookings-Harbor High School girls' cross country team edged out Hidden Valley by a mere point to take third place at the Chieftain Invitational in Rogue River on Saturday.

Ally Manley won her fourth race of the year with a time of 19:13.

andquot;We haven't been able to find anyone who can run with her yet,andquot; Coach Terry Axel said. andquot;She led at the 1-mile mark and just kept increasing her lead.andquot;

Amy Axel and Nicole Ledford both ran personal records for the Bruins as the number two and three runners.

Axel came in 16th overall at 21:55 and Ledford finished 20th with a time of 22:17.

Krista Watterson was the fourth Bruin runner in 27th place at 23:40, followed by Charlotte Smith in 31st at 24:05.

Rachel Carrillo came in 37th for the Bruins with her personal best of 26:01.

The Bruins were without Marianne Neighbors because of an injury and Andi Gutierrez was unable to finish the race after aggravating a nagging hip injury.

In the boys' race, the Bruins finished fourth overall, just three points behind Crater.

Senior Steven Sanders, the Bruins top runner, was unable to race after falling extremely ill.

After going to the emergency room and undergoing surgery for a hernia, Sanders will be out for the remainder of the season.

Although this will be a huge blow for the Bruins, the rest of the team will still have a chance to make it to the state meet.

andquot;If the rest of the guys can tighten their pack, we still have a shot to make it to state,andquot; Axel said.

Willie Bennett stepped up for the Bruins Saturday and finished 11th overall with a personal best of 17:18.

The next four Bruin finishers were within 30 seconds of one another.

Linden Loren took 20th place overall with a time of 17:45.

Right on his heels was Chris Neighbor in 22nd place at 17:48.

Not far behind him was Alec Rosenthal in 25th with a time of 18:07.

Gage Northrup was the fifth Bruin finisher in 27th place at 18:11.

The boys' team is now 38-4 on the year while the girls' team is 35-7.

The next meet for the Bruins is on Thursday, Oct. 4 at Myrtle Point.
