Halfway through the season, the Brookings-Harbor High School girls' soccer team is still undefeated.
The Bruins (7-0), put on another impressive show for the home crowd as they defeated the South Umpqua Lancers 3-0.
andquot;I'm really proud of the kids and what they've accomplished so far,andquot; Coach Paul Angove said. andquot;But we have an incredibly tough schedule in the second half and we can't get complacent.andquot;
The Bruins came out slow in the first half and weren't able to control the game early on.
andquot;We didn't play well on defense in the first half,andquot; Angove said. andquot;I think it was nerves. But we played absolutely outstanding in the second half and just out worked them.andquot;
Jillian McCool scored the lone goal in the first half as she launched a booming shot from way out that floated over the head of the Lancer goalie for the 1-0 lead.
Midway through the first half, the Lancers had a good scoring opportunity, but Ciara Freeman made a big stop in front of the goal and then goalie Ellen Stadelman dove on the loose ball to end the threat.
The Bruins came out in the second half and played extremely well as a team, eliminating their mental mistakes and controlling the tempo of the game.
andquot;This is a tight-knit group,andquot; Angove said. andquot;And a team that gets along well is going to be successful.andquot;
Ten minutes into the second half, McCool lofted a perfect corner kick to Ashley Juarez who headed it in for a 2-0 lead.
Juarez has now scored in all seven of the Bruins' wins.
Just a few minutes later, Jessie Goergen took a free kick that was blocked by the goalkeeper, but Sonja Gonzalez was there to clean up the rebound and notched her second goal of the year to give the Bruins the 3-0 advantage.
Stadelman and the Bruin defense recorded their third straight shut out and fifth of the year.
The Bruins have now outscored their opponents 22-2 on the year and haven't allowed a goal in over 280 minutes.
On Thursday, the Bruins begin the second half of the season on the road against Coquille at 4:30 p.m.
