While battling for the top spot in the Far West League, the Brookings-Harbor High School boys' soccer team defeated the South Umpqua Lancers 4-2 Tuesday to stay at the top of the league standings.

andquot;It was a pretty good game for us,andquot; Coach Gabe Anaya said. andquot;We're starting to score more and play a lot better at away games.andquot;

The Lancers struck first and took an early 1-0 lead.

But the Bruins bounced back as Mark Aguirre and Linden Loren scored to give the Bruins a 2-1 lead at the half.

andquot;We were passing and controlling the ball very well,andquot; Anaya said. andquot;Even when we were losing we were still in control.andquot;

In the second half, the Bruins took a 3-1 lead as the Lancer goalkeeper tried to make a save during a scramble in front of the net, but ended up grabbing the ball and crossing the goal line for the score.

Aguirre tallied his second goal of the game later in the half to put the Bruins up 4-1.

With about ten minutes left to play, the Lancers managed to add another goal for the final score of 4-2.

The Bruins start the second half of the season at home as they take on the Coquille Red Devils on Thursday, Oct. 4 at 4:30 p.m.
