After mounting a comeback and nearly overtaking the Bandon Tigers Monday evening, the Brookings-Harbor High School girls' basketball team ran out of steam on Tuesday as they lost to the Cascade Christian Challengers 41-17.
andquot;In the first half, we got some really good looks, we just couldn't buy a lay-up,andquot; Coach Chris Schofield said. andquot;It was an uphill climb and we just couldn't get going.andquot;
Jessie Goergen was the only offensive threat for the Bruins as she led the team with 11 points.
Lizeth Ochoa, Kara Miller and Ashley Juarez added two points apiece.
On Monday, after only managing four first half points, the Bruins outscored the Tigers 31-21 in the second half, but couldn't overcome their early deficit as they fell 42-35 to Bandon.
The Bruins couldn't get their offense going in the first half and didn't even make a field goal until the third quarter.
andquot;We didn't run an offense in the first half and we played really timid,andquot; Schofield said.
But, after trailing 21-4 at the half, the Bruins regrouped and started to run their offense.
andquot;The energy was a lot better in the second half,andquot; Schofield said. andquot;The girls picked it up and the intensity level was high.andquot;
The Bruins still trailed by 20 after the third quarter, but started to chip away at the Tiger lead in the fourth.
High energy defense helped fuel the comeback for the Bruins.
In the final minutes of play, Goergen recorded five steals which led to several transition baskets for the Bruins.
Goergen scored the final 11 points for the Bruins as they slashed the lead down to seven before they ran out of time.
andquot;They got back into the game because they worked hard,andquot; Schofield said.
Goergen led the Bruins with 15 points while Chelsey Hannan had six, Allison Larsson and Miller each had five and Juarez chipped in four points.
The JV Bruins won their season opener as they defeated the Tigers 34-22.
The Bruins play a rematch against the Tigers at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1 at home. JV action begins at 4:15 p.m.
