Pins proved to be the difference as the Brookings-Harbor High School wrestling team fell to the North Bend Bulldogs 51-33 in a league dual meet Thursday evening.
While both teams forfeited two matches apiece - 103 and 135 pounds - the Bulldogs had six pins in their seven wins while the Bruins only managed two pins in five wins.
andquot;It had its good moments and its bad,andquot; Coach Dave Freeman said. andquot;There were some matches that I expected us to win that we didn't win. We just have to keep plugging along.andquot;
The Bruins continued to be plagued by injuries as they lost varsity wrestlers Willie Bennett (140) and Dustin Paradis (135) earlier in the week.
andquot;I just wish we could get to a point where we're all healthy on the mat at the same time,andquot; Freeman said.
At 112 pounds, freshman Aaron Miller had a tough time with Nick Cheser and was pinned in 1:40.
Junior Ray Mazyck found redemption as he defeated Jake Schneider in an 8-6 decision in the 119-pound division, avenging a loss in the championship match of the Reedsport Invitational.
Mazyck trailed 4-2 after the second period, but rallied with a takedown, two nearfall points and a reversal to come back and steal an 8-6 win from Schneider.
At 125 pounds, freshman Brock Bristow struggled to score on Kyle Deming as he was pinned in 4:42.
At 130 pounds, sophomore Ian Mjelde hung with Justin Frison for two periods, but got reversed at the start of the third period and was eventually pinned at the 5:00 mark.
Freshman Daniel Grubb put up a good fight against Nathan Kelly as he registered the first takedown of the match, but Kelly's experience took over in the second period as he took control of the match and pinned Grubb in 3:46.
At 145 pounds, senior Tyler Drafahl got shut out by Kory Karavanich is a 7-0 loss.
Senior Cody Miller used takedowns in the first and second periods and a reversal and three nearfall points in the third to secure a 9-2 decision over Bruce Ohlrich in their 152-pound contest.
In the 160-pound division, junior Evan Peterson got pinned in 1:41 by James Baker.
After being taken down first, Peterson reversed Baker and briefly put him on his back to take a 4-2 lead, but then got caught in a reversal and got pinned.
In an exciting, high-scoring match, sophomore Kyle Hover used his grit and determination to outlast James Allison in a 16-15 win.
Hover used three takedowns in the first two periods to grab a 9-7 lead heading into the third and final period.
In the third, Hover used a pair of reversals and three nearfall points to hold on to his lead and secure the one-point victory.
The only two Bruin pins on the night came from senior Joel Mitts (189) and junior Mike Althof (215) as they both made quick work of their opponents.
Mitts pinned J. Moore in 1:20 while Althof took care of Brian Beesley in :42.
In the final varsity match of the night, junior Mike Klein got pinned by the Bulldogs' J. Tobey in 3:56.
Denny Davis, Ron Hunt and Cody Brooks also won exhibition matches.
The Bruins will be competing in the Siuslaw Tournament in Florence today (Jan. 19) with wrestling starting at 9 a.m.
