Members of the Azalea Middle School track team participated in the Far West League district track meet Saturday, May 10, in Coos Bay.
andquot;Our kids did really well,andquot; Coach Ted Burdett said. andquot;I was pleased with the way everyone competed. They're a great team and a fun bunch to be around.andquot;
Stealing the show was eighth-grader AJ Callaway, who set a new school and district record in the javelin with his winning throw of 184-04.
The mark places him atop the standings in the nation for the event as recorded by Athletic.net.
andquot;He broke the (district) record by 20 feet,andquot; Burdett said. andquot;And if the wind hadn't of picked up, he would have broken it by 40 feet.andquot;
The eighth grade 4x100 relay team continued their unbeaten streak with another win at the district meet.
Chandler Gotfried, Andrew Tygart, Tim Drafhal and Jack Chen completed an undefeated streak that has spanned over two years of competition.
andquot;They did a wonderful job with their handoffs,andquot; Burdett said of the quartet and their victory. andquot;It was poetry in motion.andquot;
Gotfried also took first place in the 200-meter dash and fellow eighth-grader Kelsa Northrup took second place in the high jump and longs jump.
Seven-grader Chaylin Curtis took second place in the 200, just missing winning the event by three-hundreths of a second.
