For the Bruin girls, Tuesday night's game didn't mean anything in terms of the standings. They'd already locked down the 4A Special Division 3 title.
Another win would simply be an additional feather in their cap, but as Head Coach Kristen Frank said, there was still a lot to play for.
The 6-0 win over the Coquille Red Devils was exactly what Frank wanted, a game where no one was hurt and the entire team had the chance to play and get some much needed preparation for the playoffs.
The game opened in dramatic fashion for the Bruins, with Ashley Juarez scoring twice by the 15th minute of the match. No doubt this was a good sign to Frank, who has been asking her team to start faster all season.
The Bruins didn't let up either, applying pressure on Coquille for the duration of the game.
In the second half, Juarez had two more scores, and the team rarely left the Devils' side on the field. The Bruins spread the scoring out as well, with Sonia Gonzalez and Jillian McCool also contributing to the flurry of second-half scoring with one goal each.
After the final whistle sounded, Frank said she was pleased with the way the game turned out, both in terms of its tone and outcome.
andquot;It was a pretty laid back match,andquot; she said. andquot;It was the perfect way to finish the regular season.andquot; andquot;Our whole goal in the game was to prepare for the playoffs, work on passing skills, runs and through-balls,andquot; she said. andquot;I was happy too, because they did play much better than at other times this season.andquot; Frank also had the opportunity to play the entire bench.
andquot;Everybody got some really quality playing time, even the freshmen,andquot; Frank said. andquot;They've all progressed a lot this year, and that could be helpful down the road.andquot; Looking back on the regular season, Frank said a number of things came to mind.
andquot;It was a great season,andquot; she said. andquot;It was fun, too. The girls also became a tight-knit group.andquot; Frank's now looking forward to the playoffs. She said the Bruins need to be prepared for whatever is next.
andquot;The teams we will be playing are going to be good,andquot; she said. andquot;We'll be underdogs, from a smaller school, not in a year-round program, but I think we'll be fine if everyone shows up and steps up.andquot;
The Bruins will host a playoff game next Tuesday at BHHS. The time and opponent have yet to be determined.
