Save the whistle buoy

The Curry Coastal Pilot

The Port of Brookings Harbor has long boasted that the Chetco River is the safest ocean bar crossing on the Oregon Coast. But a U.S. Coast Guard review is threatening that safety, proposing that the Whistle Buoy" be removed.

As Pilot fishing columnist Larry Ellis explained in Saturday's edition, "maintaining the Whistle Buoy is vital in saving lives."

"If you're coming from the north, the Whistle is what keeps you out of the rocks on Chetco Point," says Ken Range, who developed the great harbor information sheet that helps keep boaters safe. "Everybody uses the whistle; that's how you line up" on safe entry to the port.

When do boaters use the sound and light of the Whistle Buoy? In any fog, any stormy weather, and in the dark; that's most of the time.

Join the South Coast Fishermen and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. Let the Coast Guard know that the Whistle Buoy is worth maintaining. Send your letter to Commander, 13th Coast Guard District, 915 Second Ave., 35th Floor, Room 350, Seattle WA 98174-1067.
