If you see something, say something.

That's good advice for anybody who wants to help thwart crime in their neighborhood.

With a sharp increase in property crimes happening in Curry County - especially in Harbor - and the lack of sheriff's patrols at night, it's important that people speak up and report it to the authorities if they see something out of the ordinary.

Suspicious indicators include a strange vehicle parked or driving up and down your street, and unfamiliar people walking through the area, looking in homes and cars.

Every bit of information reported to authorities can help them piece together evidence and possibly lead to the arrest of criminals - and lengthier sentences.

Police say most home burglaries are committed by amateurs, who can be easily thwarted by doing the following:

andbull;Lock up your home, even if you go out only for a short time. Many burglars just walk in through an unlocked door or window.

andbull;Your house should appear occupied at all times. Use timers to switch lights and radios on and off when you're not at home.

andbull;Use deadbolt locks.

andbull;Replace door locks if your keys have been lost or stolen.

andbull;Burglars hate the light. Install security lights around your home.

andbull; If someone comes to your door asking to use the phone to call a mechanic or the police, keep the door locked and make the call for them.

The Curry County Sheriff's Department has acknowledged that it can't respond as quickly as it would like to when property crimes are committed. Which leaves it up to residents to work independently and collaboratively to protect their homes and neighborhoods.
