The Curry Coastal Pilot

Shop holiday Habitat

Curry County Habitat for Humanity would like to take this opportunity to help the community, let you gift a friend or gift yourself. Since all people at the store are volunteers, all proceeds go back to Curry County.

Now you can purchase a gift certificate for giving, a stocking stuffer or for your own purchases at a 20-percent discount. That means you get a $50 certificate for $40 or a $20 certificate for $16. You just tell us what you want.

The store specializes in new and slightly used building material for the bargain shopper.

We have all sorts of needs for volunteers. We need retail sales help in the store. We need clerical help. We need bookkeeping help. We need ABWK (A Brush With Kindness) volunteers to help make our community more comfortable for its residents. We have a fun atmosphere. We are all working together through Habitat for Humanity to improve the community for everyone.

The store will be open the next three weekends on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. Please come get acquainted and see firsthand how we are working to improve Curry County. The store will be closed Christmas weekend and New Year's weekend.

Thank you so much for a great 2013 for Curry County Habitat for Humanity and for Curry County. Residents now have flooring, cabinets, windows, doors and even toilets that they may not have been able to afford before the store opened.

Please come see us so we can personally say thank you!

Light a candle Dec. 8

On behalf of the Northwest Coast Chapter of The Compassionate Friends, I thank the mayors and cities of Brookings, Crescent City, Gold Beach and Port Orford for proclamations they have presented to The Compassionate Friends announcing the second Sunday of December as Worldwide Candle Lighting Day in conjunction with the Compassionate Friends Candle Lighting programs, remembering all children, grandchildren, brothers and sisters who have died.

The Compassionate Friends (TCF) is a national, non-profit, self-help bereavement group that provides a caring environment in which bereaved parents, siblings and grandparents can work through their grief with the help of others traveling the same road. The Worldwide Candle Lighting Program is participated in by over 30 countries around the globe, and thousands of organized groups and individuals in the U.S.

Locally, the program will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 8. We gather at the Kalmiopsis Elementary School, 650 Easy Street, Brookings, in the playground under Shelter 1. Weather will not cancel; however, we recommend you dress warmly. The public is invited. Candles and refreshments are provided.

Thank you, again, Mayors Ron Hedenskog, Richard Holley, Karl Popoff and James Auborn and your cities of Brookings, Crescent City, Gold Beach and Port Orford, respectively. Your recognition of this important event is much appreciated.

Georgia Cockerham, Zach's mom, chapter leader, TCF Northwest Coast vice president, TCF National board of directors

Santa Paws is coming to town!!

He is going to be in Gold Beach and Brookings. Come and share the holiday season with your pet by having a pet portrait done with Santa at Woof's Bakery in Gold Beach on December 7, 2013, between noon and 3 p.m. Santa will also be in Brookings December 14, 2013, at Woof's Bakery between noon and 3 p.m. for your pet portraits. Don't miss this opportunity to have a holiday portrait done of your beloved pet.

Creating this wonderful memory is only $10 for an 8-inch by 10-inch. All proceeds go directly to Pennies for Pooches/Curry County Animal Shelter in Gold Beach. So you won't only be giving a great time to your pet, you will also be helping the animals at the shelter to make their holidays brighter, too.

We want to give a big holiday thank you to Carballo Photography for doing the portraits for us, Tiny Caudell of Blue Pacific Realty being a great Santa, and of course Woof's Bakery for letting us do this fundraising event at their establishment and helping Pennies for Pooches/Curry County Animal Shelter throughout the year.

Start out the holidays in the spirit of giving to others, whether it is our human friends or our furry four-legged friends. Thank you all for your year-round support you have shown us so generously.
