The Curry Coastal Pilot

The physical attributes of the Southern Oregon Coast - the ocean, the beaches, the mountains, the rivers - has and always will be what attracts many visitors. It's an easy sell.

But focusing solely on those things - as many tourism advocates do - is a great disservice to our community.

What about the art?

What about the music?

What about the theater?

Many of Oregon's tourism-destination areas - Sisters, Bend, Ashland - rely heavily on their community's cultural assets to attract visitors.

It should be no different in Curry County where, for the last decade, our cultural offerings have grown significantly with live theater, concerts, festivals and art events happening nearly every weekend of the year.

Hundreds of volunteers in Port Orford, Gold Beach, Brookings and Harbor support the local arts and provide a variety of quality, cultural experiences. Let's not sell them short.

We urge those in the tourism-promotion business to not solely rely on the undeniable physical beauty of our area, but to champion the community's human assets and show potential visitors that our beauty is more than skin deep.
